cyanotype print of The Fox’s Restaurant, captured from Google Maps before the fire
When I read about the fires in Los Angeles earlier this year,
I felt an unexpected ache for the homes, the lives, the places that were suddenly gone. Now, they exist as digital ghosts still visible on Google Maps, as memories you can walk through.
As a child, I lost my home to bombing. My school, my neighborhood — everything disappeared. I often wish I could
walk those streets again, even just virtually.
This piece began with that feeling. I found the Fox’s Restaurant — like a ghost on Google Maps, a place that used to be and I thought: maybe that’s where los ángeles live now.
